The luxurious Voyager Beach Resort is among the finest places on Mombasa’s North Coast. It is only 30 minutes from the Moi International Airport and offers an all-inclusive experience for both local and international visitors.
I had the privilege of staying at the Voyager for a few days on a business trip, but I will definitely go back with my family, and stay longer. Here’s why.
Accommodation
The Voyager has 232 rooms, or as they call them cabins, with the options of a garden view and sea view. I got a garden-view standard room, but I cannot complain as it was more than spacious, and closer to the pool and restaurants.
There are also superior cabins which are larger than the standard cabins and have two king-sized beds, and you can have one either facing the garden or the ocean.
Every room has excellent air conditioning, a safe, a mini bar, as well as a hair dryer. However, satellite TV is available in the superior cabins only, so I had to made do without it. Wireless internet was also available in some places around the hotel, which was a bit of an inconvenience as I would have preferred it in my room.
I also found that if you needed a cot for your baby, it would be made available for you at no charge. This was a handy tip especially for families that have younger children traveling with them.
Dining
I would definitely go back to the Voyager just for the food alone. Of the 3 main restaurants, I especially liked the seafood at Smuggler’s Cove, but if you want Italian you can dine at the Minestrone Restaurant.
The breakfast buffet was something else, so much variety from the hot drinks to cold options. It’s best that you take your time at the buffets and pick out your favorites, or try something new.
The Harbour Lounge Bar was another great hang-out place after the evening meetings. It is open 24 hours and there are excellent drinks to choose from, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. The Kaskazi Bar and Lookout Bar are also great options for drinks and maybe to catch a game or two if you’re not in a hurry.
Activities
I’m grateful that my business stay at the Voyager had included some extra activities, so I got to enjoy the gaming area, watch a game of beach volleyball and check out the water park, which particularly deserves special mention.
If you have kids and are planning to visit Mombasa for vacation, the fun pool for the kids would be fantastic. Plenty of activities, a waterfall and a sports pool all suit children of different ages, and you can also enjoy the beach front pool and watch people milling about on the beach.
The Voyager also has 2 tennis courts and an indoor gaming facility for darts, pool and other games, which would be a great place to make new friends. There are also entertainment and family shows every evening, so you can chill out and enjoy the traditional African dances or amazing acrobats after dinner.
If you would like to do some shopping, the Voyager Beach Resort also has a shopping arcade with a ton of stuff that can be useful for your holiday.
A few tips…
The Voyager is a very popular destination, so if you would prefer an ocean view room, please book early. It is also ideal if you really don’t need to go outside and mingle with the locals, because first of all the resort has everything you need already, and secondly because you won’t want to leave! I am already planning my next visit to the Voyager and stay for at least two weeks to enjoy everything the resort has to offer.
